Hilda Vandergriff

Artist Biography
Hilda was raised in the California San Joaquin Valley. Her art career began after retiring as a high school secretary. At this time she discovered she had a knack for drawing and began to take art classes and workshops in watercolor and Chinese calligraphy. She continues to discover new art techniques by experimenting with art materials and color combinations.

Her watercolor paintings are colorful, her suminagashi art is unique, her Chinese Brush paintings have a traditional eastern style and her mixed media are more abstract.

Nature is especially dear to her heart and is her inspiration. Her admiration for, animals, insects, flowers and landscapes is evident. She looks for beauty in all her subject matter that ultimately will translate into a cherished piece of artwork.

Hilda shares her art at charitable events donating original paintings to their causes. She competes in national juried and local exhibitions and has won awards. This year she is part of the San Joaquin River Parkway & Conservations Trust Art Auction event and will participate in the Paso Robles Wine Festival event held in May. Hilda is active with the Alliance of California Artists. She is looking forward to working with her art organization to help an animal shelter in her community.

Last summer Hilda taught children art classes in watercolor and Chinese brush painting at Arts Visalia Gallery and the Hanford Kings Art Center. An accomplishment she is proud of knowing that she touched children’s lives with art. The children taught her that there is more to life than winning awards; it’s about making a difference in someone's life.

Hilda also participates in the annual Open Studio Art Tour for the Central Coast North County sponsored by ARTS Obispo. She welcomes you to visit her home studio in Morro Bay this October. Visit www.artsobispo.org for more information.
